What I’m Reading: Run Like A Pro (Even if You’re Slow)
“In 80/20 Running, respected running and fitness expert Matt Fitzgerald introduced his revolutionary training program and explained why doing 80 percent of runs at a lower intensity and just 20 percent at a higher intensity is the best way for runners at all levels--as well as cyclists, triathletes, and even weight-loss seekers--to improve their performance.
Now, in this eye-opening follow-up, Fitzgerald teams with Olympic coach Ben Rosario to expand and update the 80/20 program to include ultramarathon training and such popular developments as the use of power meters.
New research has bolstered the case that the 80/20 method is in fact that most effective way to train for distance running and other endurance sports. Run Like a Pro (Even If You’re Slow) shows readers how to take the best practices in elite running and adopt them within the limits of their own ability, lifestyle, and budget.”
This likely won’t be the last time you see me reference or highlight work by Matt Fitzgerald, who I have found to be one of the more informed and objective sources on endurance training and who is also a superb communicator. Run Like A Pro is a one-stop shop for foundational knowledge on all aspects of preparation needed to stay healthy, perform your best, and enjoy the process as a running enthusiast. He does this by demystifying the basic principles and practices of professional runners to show you that amateurs can easily adopt similar strategies to get the most out of their running and can integrate these changes into their busy, complicated lives.
Fitzgerald and Rosario cover a wide range of topics that include training tips (intensity, mileage, variation, specificity), recovery, nutrition, strength training, and mental preparation. Particularly interesting are the personal stories and insights provided by Ben Rosario, founder and former coach of Naz Elite, that compliment each section.
There are other resources (including more by Fitzgerald) that may dive into greater detail on specific topics, but this is a great entry point for anyone who has “caught the bug” of running but needs to develop the right practices, habits, and mindset to make it a successful, enjoyable, sustainable hobby.
